| Baldness in
men, unlike hair loss in women, is frequently seen as an inevitable, often
sexy part of the ageing process. Some people even say a hairless head is a
sign of virility! But if you're not happy with a receding hairline and/or
bald patch, here's how to make the most of what you've got and a few ways to
slow the process down. What causes premature balding in men? A number of factors can lead to baldness in men, including stress, illness, scalp infections and certain prescription drugs. But the most common cause of baldness is genetically determined and unavoidable. If your father is bald, you've got a pretty good chance of losing your hair, too. Testosterone is at the root of the problem - for men who are genetically programmed for baldness, chemical receptors in the hair follicles convert testosterone to dihydro-testosterone and, as they get older, this causes the follicles to produce thin, downy hair. How a trichologist can help? As well as examining your hair and scalp, a trichologist will ask questions about your general health and medical history, your diet, lifestyle and the way you look after your hair. He or she may decide that blood tests are needed to check for any underlying hormonal problems. But the bottom line is that if you're genetically predisposed to go bald, you're probably going to have to learn to accept it. Ways to help slow down premature balding Apart from lifestyle changes, such as reducing your stress levels and improving your diet, the only other way to slow down premature balding is by micrograft transplantation, where individual hairs are sewn into the head. This is a big decision because the procedure isn't always successful and is time-consuming and expensive. The other option? There are some regrowth drugs on the market that have been shown to encourage hair growth in some men but, again, success is not guaranteed. They appear to work best on men who are just starting to lose their hair or those with very fine hair. Wearing hairpieces and wigs If you have extensive hair loss and you're not comfortable with your bald patch, you could consider a custom-made hairpiece. Don't bother wasting your money on cheap, mass-produced hairpieces as they usually look false. |
