| Flirting with
hair colour at home has never been easier. Products are easy to use,
foolproof and affordable and there are shades to suit every head of hair,
from the palest blonde to the deepest red. Once you've chosen the right
shade and formulation, set aside half an hour to transform your tresses. Choosing the right shade Whatever you do, don't choose your colour based on the model on the box. Instead, use the chart on the back as a guide to what shade you will realistically end up with. Also, take into account your skin tone - if your hair colour is too strong or pale for you, it can drain your complexion. On the other hand, a complementary shade will make your eyes look brighter and your complexion glow. Colour shampoo and conditioner The upkeep of colour has never been easier with the recent influx of colour shampoos and conditioners on the haircare shelves. They don't produce dramatic or permanent colour changes but are formulated to refresh and maximise the hair's colour. Choose products that match the shade of your hair and use in the same way as your usual shampoo and conditioner - no gloves required! Colour rinse A colour rinse is a great introduction to colour as it washes out after one to three shampoos. It's best for a boost but not for drastic colour change or for covering grey. Semi-permanent colour These change the tone but not the depth of the hair's colour and usually last for up to eight shampoos. They boost condition and shine but can have uneven results on damaged hair. They're great if you want to spend a few days brighter than your natural colour but aren't really suitable for lightening the hair, a dynamic change or covering grey. Demi-permanent colour The next step up in the world of home hair colour, but not quite as daring as a permanent shade, a demi-permanent colourant lasts for 12 to 20 washes. It's perfect for covering grey hair, adding rich colour and infusing shine, but not for making the hair lighter. Suitable for permed hair. Permanent colour Not surprisingly, a permanent dye stains the hair until it is cut off, so it's best to be sure before experimenting. It's great for lightening, dramatic shade changes and covering grey. The roots take about six weeks to show. Applying permanent colour Never, ever colour your hair without doing a strand test first to make sure you're not allergic to the product and that you're going to get the result you want. The other golden rule is not to colour your hair too soon after any other chemical treatment, such as a perm. Stick to the guidelines on the box and don't be tempted to leave it on longer than suggested. Smear petroleum jelly on your hairline to protect your skin and wipe off any excess colour that gets onto your skin right away. Every home-colourant box should have a hair-company helpline - if you need to, ring for advice before you take the plunge. |
