Gasherbrum
means Shining wall. This refers to 3,050m/10,000ft pale limestone walls
on the great trapeze shaped Gasherbrum IV Peak. There are six Gasherbrum
Peaks in the Karakorum range. It was Captain Younghusband and his party
which in 1889 discovered Gasherbrum glacier. It was in 1958 that a
strong Italian expedition led by Riccardo Cassin climbed Gasherbrum IV
Peak 7925m/ 26,000ft through north ridge, after over-coming great
climbing difficulties. It wer the mountainers like Walter Bonatti and
Carlo Mauri who successfully reached its top. Route to the Peak is
through -Skardu -Baltor Glacier -Masherbrum Glacier.
